Phrases that may cause confusion in the office

Some companies motivate their staff using colorful language. Some of such statements may send mixed signals. For example:

1. “Nothing is impossible.” We all know it’s an exaggeration. But overworked employees and excited customers may not know where bravado ends and reality begins.

2. “Don’t be afraid to fail.” However, I don’t know a lot of companies that actually give a bonus or award to teams behind failed projects.

3. “Empower the staff.” Do you actually mean give them the power to make decisions, or just make them feel confident?

4. “Open-door policy.” In reality, every big boss’s door is guarded by a powerful executive secretary. You may need at least one week to get an appointment.

Experts recommend that we avoid ambiguity in management language in order to minimize frustrations and wrong expectations.
